By Gary Pflueger Principal Valley View Elementary As this is the first Principal Press of the New Year, I would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year. I have enjoyed this school year and look forward to continuing the positive direction Valley View is heading. I have seen huge improvements in student performance and behavior as the students and staff have fully internalized the theme of SAFE, CIVIL & PRODUCTIVE. To celebrate this addition of the PPP, I would like to acknowledge the progress we have made and the needs we still have. Let’s start with the Student Council! We elected a new Student Council earlier in the school year. The members include: President Sydney Watt, V.P. Quinn Plato and Treasurer Emily Blackmore. The Class Representatives are: Grace Villelli, Lillian Goad, Katie Clairmont, Ashlyn Rushing, Sierra Summerfield and Max Lange. This group and the student body have raised over $450 at the midyear point of the year. This money will be used for community service and school pride activities. A portion of this will be donated to the Animal Shelter per Student Council vote. We are looking into having a school sign made for the front of the school. Other projects include the creation of a school yearbook, Spirit Day Activities, Jog-A-Thon and a Talent Show before the end of the year. Currently, the Student Council held a canned food drive Thursday to support “Fill the Bus,” which honors Martin Luther King, Jr. and supports the local food bank. PTO has enjoyed an increase in parent participation! This is great but we also experienced an increase in financial need. The PTO traditionally pays for grade level field trips. The cost of these trips has taken a jump! We hope to continue these educationally based field trips, as they have a lasting effect on the students. Through creative funding and donations, these important trips will continue. Other needs previously listed have been completed. We now have a new (used) microwave for student use in the lunchroom. The students have enjoyed this donation—deliciously. Also, an individual has volunteered to finish the wooden name plates for each of the teacher’s classrooms. We are busy working on the State Academic Standards in preparation for the ISAT Testing in April and May. It is our plan to have the students relaxed and ready for this annual requirement. All you need to do to help is to find time to read with your child — daily! Review math facts with flash cards, review written language skills on daily assignments. As any teacher knows: the better you do in school, the better you will do in life!
