By Gary Pflueger Principal Valley View Elementary We are halfway through the school year—we must be having fun, ‘cuz time is sure flying! I typed up a list of upcoming events, listed below, and we are busy. I have a number of odds and ends to let you know about. First, some celebrations: ~ Kenn Nesbitt was great fun! The assembly was enjoyable and the afternoon workshops great. Thanks go out to our sponsors: Debbie Pauls of Idaho Reads, the Rotary Club and the Eagles. ~The District Spelling Bee was held over the weekend. Winning the third grade division was Olivia Pinkerton of Mt. Hall, coming in second place was Miles Lefebvre from Valley View. Chase Tucker and Hayden Stockton, both of Valley View, fought it out in the fourth grade finals with Chase taking it in an exciting “spell-off." Fifth grade came down to Katie Clairmont Valley View, Katelyn Hutchinson, Mt. Hall, and Alex Garey, Valley View, with first through third coming in this order. Great job to these students and all the other class winners! ~ Valley View's contribution to the Martin Luther King, Jr. “Fill the Bus” program was 842+ food items and one bottle of shampoo. Mrs. Funkhouser’s class brought in the most; Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Beck were second and third. Great job Student Council! ~ We just received a check from BoxTops for $908! Great stuff! Keep these coming in!!! On the back of this letter is a new fundraiser from Litehouse, which will pay 50 cents for every lid, outer package or receipt of purchase. We now have a collection box for these. ~ The fruit and vegetable snack program is running great! All students have enjoyed a different treat each day, provided through a grant. Thank you Tammy and the Food Service Program. Now, some needs: ~ Debbie Flory is running an optional “Smarties Club” during first recess. The students join her to work on their multiplication facts, and she needs playing cards for this. If you have any new or old cards which can be donated, please drop them by. ~ We have found a few cases of head lice, which the school has handled appropriately. This is a good time of the year to check your child at home. Also, remind them not to share hats and coats. Any parent who would like to join our “Lice Busting Team,” please let the office know; we could use more help. We will provide training. ~ We now have a parent input survey on our web page. Please make time to share your thoughts with us. We want your input on our teaching effectiveness.
