'Once on this Island Jr.' to take the stage

July 8, 2013

More than 20 Boundary County kids, ages six through 17, have been working hard since school let out preparing and rehearsing for "Once on this Island Jr.," an amazing musical adaptation of "The Little Mermaid" with a Caribbean flair and poignant story, set to take the stage at Bonners Ferry High School's Becker Auditorium this week.

Except for Sundays and the Fourth of July, these troupers have been practicing, rehearsing, building sets, singing, dancing, learning lines and more for hours each day, spending their summer vacation time, as young actress Lily Blackmore says, "with people you don't normally see."

"It's fun!" added actor Duncan Mckechnie.

An outsider can't truly get the gist of a theatrical production such as this by watching a few minutes of a random rehearsal; the action is paused, the forestage strewn with scripts, water bottles and other detritus. In a way, it's like walking into a mansion being, built. You can glean the general outline and imagine, but when well crafted, nothing prepares you for the finished product except seeing it.

"It's a story about the two most important things, love and death," said Sean Varelman. "It's a test to see which is greater, but it shows how they actually go hand in hand."

With its poignant story, catchy Caribbean-flavored score, "Once on this Island Jr." is a true feast for the heart, mind and soul, with almost non-stop song and dance, a very colorful set, great costumes, and a great cast.

Jessy Trocke, Zach Cleve, Nick Magdaleno, Jill Alexander, Myla Mckechnie, Michael Brooks, Sean Varelman, Samantha Barradale, Taylor Cromwell, Mary Fioravanti and Michael Cromwell all have cast roles, and company members are Holly Alexander, Teigan Banning, Marissa Beggerly, Lily Blackmore, Jamie Cromwell, Dunvan Mckechnie, Jessie Mckechnie, Shayla Poppino, Aidan Winters, Mattea Winters, Hanna Magdaleno, Adrianne Mangus and Amanda Patzer.

"Once on this Island, Jr." debuts at 7 p.m. this Thursday on the Becker Auditorium stage, with shows at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m.

General seating tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, available at the door.

This is going to be a show you don't want to miss!
