To calculate the amount of crash force in a
frontal crash, multiply the weight of an object
with the speed of an object. This was the first
lesson taught in the Child Passenger Safety
Certification Training Program offered by
SafeKids that Marcia Morman, Boundary Community
Hospital's Community Relations Coordinator,
attended. If a child weighing 30 pounds is riding in a car traveling 30 miles an hour, in a frontal crash (most crashes are frontal crashes), the crash force is 900 pounds. The importance of having a child securely restrained is self-evident. Boundary Community Hospital, with the help of a $1,500 grant from Idaho Community Foundation, made possible by the Gladys E. Langroise Advised Fund, has purchased children car seats. In addition, the Hospital Auxiliary funded car seats. "We want the children in our community to be safe," said Boundary Community Hospital's CEO Craig A. Johnson. " We are very thankful for the Gladys E. Langroise Advised Fund administered by Idaho Community Foundation for their gift of $1500.00 to be used for children safety restraints." "A child needs to fit properly in the seat and the seat needs to be positioned correctly in the vehicle or the safety value of a car seat is negated." Morman said. "We have a limited number of seats for community members. If there are individuals, organizations, or businesses in the community who would like to help in funding car seats, that would be welcome." Along with the car seat, Boundary Community Hospital offers advice on how to safely install the car seat, and guidance on what car seat is best for the child.
