October 17, 2016 |
The Idaho State Police Investigations Division,
Patrol Division, and Crash Reconstruction Unit
are continuing to investigate the vehicle versus
pedestrian fatality crash involving a Kootenai
County Sheriff's Deputy which occurred in the
intersection of US 95 and Miles Avenue in the
early morning hours of October 8.
The preliminary investigation has revealed Amber
Viuhkola was crossing the above intersection
westbound on foot when she was struck by a
Kootenai County Sheriff's patrol vehicle, a 2008
Ford Crown Victoria, driven by Kootenai County
Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Nye.
The collision occurred in the right hand
southbound lane of US 95, and preliminary
findings have revealed Deputy Nye was driving at
or close to the posted speed limit of 55 mph.
The Idaho State Police are very appreciative of
the motorists and witnesses in the area at the
time of the crash who have assisted thus far
with the investigation.
The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, including
Deputy Nye, as well as Viuhkola's family, have
also cooperated in the investigation.
There is much more work to be completed on this
case, with a full collision reconstruction
expected in the next few weeks or months. The
reconstruction report's purpose is to explore
all aspects of the crash and determine the
causational and contributing factors.
At the investigation's completion, this case
will be forwarded to the appropriate prosecuting
attorney's office to determine what, if any,
criminal charges should be levied.
The Idaho State Police requests any other
members of the general public who may have
additional assistance to offer for this incident
to please contact the ISP District 1 Office at
(208) 209-8620. The Idaho State Police also
wants to ensure the community that a full, fair,
and competent investigation will be completed
and requests your patience in the matter while
this is achieved. |
