Creston gearing up for Blossom Festival |

The 76th annual Creston Valley Blossom Festival,
with the theme "76 Trombones – Canada
Celebrating 150 Years" will fill the streets of
Creston, B.C., with a plethora of activities,
most of them free, that kick off on Friday, May
19, and last all through the long weekend to
Monday.
The Grand Entry for this year's seventh annual
School District 8 Youth Powwow morning session
takes place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the
Creston and District Community Complex, 312D
19th Avenue North, and the afternoon session
gets underway at 12:15 p.m. and lasts through
2:15 p.m.
Admission is free, and all dancers are welcome!
There will be a Lego Challenge for kids running
through Monday, May 22, with People's Choice
judging being accomplished by the visiting
public. Entries will be on display at the
Creston Valley Visitor's Centre, 121 Northwest
Boulevard, and registration forms can be picked
up there as well.
On Friday evening, the official Creston Valley
Blossom Festival opening ceremony will be held
at 7 p.m. at the Prince Charles Theatre, where
the citizen of the year will be introduced and
Canadian Country Music Award winner Lindi Ortega
will perform with special guests JJ Shiplett and
Daniel Huscroft.
There will also be a teen dance from 7 to 11
p.m. in Millennium Park on 16th Avenue South.
Tickets are $40 per person and they're available
at Black Bear Books, 1229 Canyon Street,
Creston.
They Creston Lions Club will be serving up
breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday on Canyon
Street beside the 7-11, and the Creston Street
Fair in Spirit Square will run from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. A Farmer's Market will be open from 9 a.m.
to 2 p.m. in the parking lot next to the Chamber
of Commerce.
At 10:50 a.m., weather permitting, the Creston
Valley Flying Club will do a fly over down
Canyon Street, setting the stage for the Blossom
Festival Parade that begins at 11 a.m. Saturday,
May 20, going from the Dairy Queen on 18th
Avenue to the Creston Valley Mall.
Assembly for the parade will begin at 8 a.m. and
judging will begin at 9:30 a.m. Assembly will be
at the Prince Charles Secondary School parking
lot, entrance via 16th Avenue South only.
For the kids, there'll be a Kidapalooza at the
College of the Rockies from noon to 4 p.m. and a
Root Beer Garden just south of Millennium Park
with a youth carnival.
You can try your hand at gold panning from 9
a.m. to 2 p.m., enjoy a free concert in
Millennium Park from 2 to 5 p.m. and lots more.
The Lower Kootenay Band Powwow will be held at
the LKB Gymnasium, 830 Simon Road, from 7 p.m.
to midnight, there'll be an Extreme Cowboy
Challenge on Indian Road from 2 to 6 p.m. and
live music and a pig roast from 4 to 11 p.m. at
Mountain Park Resort.
This year's Black and Red Ball, featuring Velle
with special guests Paula McGuigan and Barley
Wik, takes place from 5:30 p.m. to midnight
Saturday in the Creston Room at the CDCC, and
all are invited to wear your best read and black
for dinner and dancing. Tickets, which include
dinner and entertainment, are $49 and available
at Black Bear Books.
On Sunday, the day begins with the Knights of
Columbus Western Breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon
in the Catholic Church hall, 128 16th Avenue,
and the Blossom 5 and 10K Runs get underway at
9a.m. in Canyon Park.
The 100K Plus Yard Sale, which stretches from
Yahk to Riondel, goes from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and
the Creston Valley Cruisers 12th annual Show &
Shine Car Show takes place from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. on Canyon Street in downtown Creston.
The Lower Kootenay Band Pow Wow and Extreme
Cowboy Challenge both continue on Sunday, and
the Blossom Festival Duck Rae takes off at noon
at the Aquatic Center, 312 19th Avenue North.
On Monday, May 22, there'll be a children's
parade sponsored by the Lions Club on Canyon
Street at 11 a.m., with a children's picnic to
follow in Centennial Park. |
