The Bonners Ferry Lacrosse Club Warriors dropped
their season opener to the Gonzaga Prep Bulldogs
15-12 under the lights at Gonzaga. While it was
the Warriors' first game, the Bulldogs already
had four games under their belt. The Warriors play their first two home games this week at the fairgrounds fields, facing Sandpoint Monday, April 11, and Logos Wednesday. Both games begin at 5 p.m. Admission is free, and everyon'e welcome to turn out to cheer on the home team. In their opener, the Warriors scored in the first minute when senior Bryan Murphy found the back of the net. The Warriors traded goals with the Bulldogs through the first quarter, with the score knotted at the bell in a 3-3 tie. For the latter three quarters, the Warriors played catch-up, with the Bulldogs leading 6-3 at the half and 11-6 at the end of the third. Head coach John Niewieroski and assistant coach Brandon Glaza had high praise for the 14 athletes who made the trip to Spokane. Five starters were unable to make the trip, so the coaches had to be creative with player substitution to insure the boys didn't run out of gas in the final quarters. Murphy led the team in scoring with six points, and had the opportunity to score more but he demonstrated his selflessness by feeding other team mates. Stephen Bachmann scored three goals, won 11 faceoffs and led the team with 13 ground balls. He also demonstrated his fine conditioning, playing more than 40 minutes of the 48-minute game. Josh Miller also had a hat trick, scoring his three goals in the final half of the game. Joel Fields finished the game with two goals. On defense, first year player Wesley Kreiner made 20 saves at the goal, many of them point blank shots, impressing his coaches greatly. Coach Niewieroski is looking for work details to help the boys with their pay-to-play fees, and anyone interested in working or donating to the team can give him a call at (208) 267-2778. |
