New zoning laws
take effect Thursday: On Thursday, November 3, a
new set of land use laws governing those who live outside city
limits in this county are going to take effect. It's taken six
years to put them all together, everyone who has played a part
in their development knows they aren't perfect ... but they will
be law.

Lincoln County Sheriff
looking for a legacy in a bag of bones: The Lincoln County, Montana, Sheriffs Office is
seeking help from anyone with information about
a bag of human bones found in a Eureka, Montana,
dumpster in August.

A day through Luka's
eyes: Like many college students, Luka Krmpotich wakes
up early so he can brew a pot of coffee before
heading out to class.
But unlike many of the 50,000 other students on
campus, the psychology major is borderline
blind, or what he refers to as having “low
vision.”

Eagles donate to
Explore 4-H program: The Boundary County Eagles Lodge generously
donated $500 to the Explore 4-H Afterschool Fun
program in Bonners Ferry. The Afterschool
program offers students, grades K-6, a safe,
casual, fun and educational environment on
Friday’s, while their parents work.

 EAA
offering youth aviation scholarship: The local Experimental Aircraft Association
(EAA) Chapter is offering one aviation
scholarship for a youth 16 to 18 years of age.
The applicant must be a
Boundary County
resident and training must be at Northern Air
Inc. located at the
Boundary
County Regional
Airport.

Idaho jobless
rate dips below national average: Hiring across the Idaho economy in September
fell just short of levels during the mid-2000
expansion, but it was enough to drive the
seasonally adjusted unemployment rate down
two-tenths of a point to 9 percent. It was the
first time Idaho’s rate has slipped below the
national rate since last November.

Chris Clark out of
running for Bonners Ferry City Council: While he no
doubt has supporters, a vote for Chris Clark to retain his seat
on the Bonners Ferry City Council in the upcoming election for
several city positions will be a vote wasted; Clark bought
property and moved out of city limits after he submitted his
declaration of candidacy to retain his seat, and he's no longer
eligible to run, but his name will still be on the ballot for
voters in the City of Bonners Ferry.

 Kootenai
River Brewing hosting a monster bash:
Mike Naumann, owner and master brewer at the
Kootenai River Brewing Company, didn't wear
lederhosen for Octoberfest, but his wait staff
did wear genuine German attire, including the
beautiful and alluring dirndl. There's no
telling what they're going to be wearing this
Saturday night, but it's going to be fun.

Live
Christmas tree to be dedicated to Dick Kelson: At
11 a.m. Saturday, December 17, "The Village of Bonners Ferry"
will dedicate a live Christmas tree to the memory of life-long
resident Dick Kelson, who died at the age of 77 May 16, 2011,
while tending his nursery on Deep Creek Loop.

Christmas tree lighting to be a festive event: This
year's Bonners Ferry tree lighting celebration
is shaping up to be a festive day that no one
looking to get into the Christmas spirit will
want to miss. Organizers are already working
hard to get Bonners Ferry merchants in the mood
to kick off a holiday season that will be long
remembered.

Winter Village coming to Bonners Ferry: Everyone who has that old fashioned spark of
Christmas is invited and encouraged to take part
in the creation of a Gingerbread Winter Village
of Bonners Ferry
that will be put on display from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. Friday and Saturday, December 16 and 17, in
the south entrance of the Bonners Ferry Museum. |

County zoning
ordinance adopted: Boundary County Commissioners on
Monday reconvened a public hearing to give final consideration
to a document nearly six years in the making, taking just half
an hour and accepting no additional public comment to approve
and adopt a new Boundary County Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance
and map, laying out land use law for the decade ahead. |

the Pearl! Both the Bonners Ferry Chamber of Commerce and
the local Rotary Club have had the early
privilege recently of seeing the community's
newest gem ... and this one's a pearl ... The
Pearl Theater. "A comfortably sized, eclectic
venue that will draw musicians and theatrical performers from
around the country to Bonners Ferry."

learns about grizzly bears: At their meeting Tuesday, October 4, Boundary
County Rotarians learned more about a critter
that's made a lot of news lately in the county,
the grizzly bear, and they heard it from two of
the people in the county who likely know more on
the subject than anyone else in the world.

Fair board seeking
member: The Boundary County Fair Board is seeking
letters of interest from community members
interested in serving to fill a vacancy.

Studded tires okay
in Idaho, Montana: While they're not recommended until conditions
warrant, it became legal in Idaho and Montana to
put on studded snow tires October 1. Those
driving in Washington and Oregon have to wait
until November 1. |

Public meeting
Thursday on proposed border security: U.S. Customs
and Border Protection will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m.
Thursday at the Great Northwest Events Center to discuss
proposed changes in security measures along the northern border
of the United States.

Idaho delegation
decries over-zealous EPA: A Priest Lake, Idaho, couple is headed for the
U.S. Supreme Court over a land use dispute with
the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that
should have never occurred, according to members
of the Idaho Congressional Delegation.

Business forum
will help harness tech: Idaho National Laboratory, University of
Idaho, Idaho TechConnect and Jobs Plus will
present a business development forum from 4 to 7
p.m., Wednesday, October 19, at the Jacklin
Science and Technology Center, University of
Idaho Research Park, 721 Lochsa St., Post Falls,
Idaho.

Recycling now easier
in Boundary County: Claine Skeen, the superintendent at the Boundary
County Landfill, knows better than most the
value of recycling, and he's never stinted in
his efforts to turn the "trash" that ends up in
our landfill into "treasure."
Following in the footsteps of his predecessor
and mentor, the late Woody Watts, his efforts
have been key to keeping local garbage disposal
affordable and keeping our county landfill
viable, and Claine and his crew recently made a
huge stride that not many in the community yet
recognize. |

you usurped my role as the baby of the family; I

the playing field of Tom, Mike and me by the

City Council moving
forward on annexation: After a contentious public hearing of the
Bonners Ferry Planning and Zoning Commission
September 29, and a vote of two yes to three no
to recommend that the idea of annexation be
stopped, the Bonners Ferry City Council on
Tuesday made motion to proceed with plans to
annex several properties into the limits of the
city. |

Watt pleads guilty:
Jennifer Watt, 39, Bonners Ferry, appeared for
an arraignment hearing this week and pled guilty
to three counts of grand theft for taking money
from the Selkirk Loop Association while she was
an employee. |

Living with wildlife
... a growing concern: At 7 p.m. Thursday, October 20, Idaho Fish and
Game biologist Becky Haag, on behalf of the
Friends of the Kootenai Wildlife Refuge, is
going to give a presentation and answer
questions on a subject gaining much national
attention lately; living with wildlife.

 Bovey
takes a dive on his way to earning wings: Dominic
Bovey, Sandpoint, is the latest new pilot to earn his wings at
Northern Air, and he took a cool dive into Priest Lake on his
way to the big moment. There's also another beautiful new
aircraft in a hangar at the Bonners Ferry Airport, and Larry
Engert has reason to smile.

20 at the Chic n'Chop Restaurant raised a record
$1,451. This was the 24th year the dinner has
been held in Bonners Ferry to benefit the local

Badger boys district cross country champions:
The Badger girls cross country team earned third
agt the district meet October 20 at Priest
River's Ranch Club Golf Course. The boys won
district and Intermountain League titles and
advanced to the state championship meet, being
held today in Boise. |

schoolers rumble to finish football season:
The seventh and eighth grade Badgers faced off against
Timberlake and Priest River to end their season last
week on a high note. |

co-ed volleyball league begins November 2: The adult co-ed volleyball league will begin
November 2, with play each Wednesday at 6:30
p.m. in the high school and middle school gyms. |

BFMS
seventh graders getting better, eighth graders shine:
The Bonners Ferry Middle School seventh graders
are struggling but making strides, while the eighth
graders are dominating, skunking Priest River 28-0 and
downing Lakeland 35-12. |

BFMS football
underway: The Bonners Ferry Middle School
seventh and eighth grade teams have their first two
games under their belts, and according to coach Don Alt,
both squads are showing promise. |

Congressman
Raul Labrador: This week the House of Representatives continued
to make reviving the economy its number one
priority by passing H.R. 674. This bill ended a
3 percent phantom “tax” on government contracts.
This new tax on doing business with the federal
government was immediately criticized, and its
implementation was delayed on two separate
occasions. |
